France-Soir

France-Soir
A French daily, founded clandestinely in 1940, France-Soir was originally a monthly of the resistance entitled Défense de la France. Becoming a daily in 1944, it took the name France-Soir in January 1945. Directed by Pierre Lazareff, who revised its format, it became in 1953 the leading French evening newspaper. Bought back by Robert Hachette of the Hachette group in 1976, it has seen its sales decline despite a plan initiated in 1989 to update its format and contents on the model of popular British dailies. It publishes 300,000 copies daily.
